All you wanna-be-artsy-painters out there LISTEN UP.

You absolutely *MUST* try Paint Nite. Get on Groupon or Living Social, search your area, and buy yourself one fun evening with your ladies (edit: guys totally can go too).

OK, but really- I signed up with my roommate to do this way back in May (?) and we finally picked a day, and a painting (very cool that you get to see ahead of time what you’ll be painting) and hit up the bar hosting the event one evening.

Photo Jul 13, 8 21 58 PM

It’s SO MUCH FUN. First, the instructor we had Elise, was hilarious. She made everyone super comfortable right up front. Lets be real, its intimidating to paint in front of people. You’re always afraid of making the wrong move. Elise made sure everyone knew from the start that there was NO wrong moves. Which resulted in a huge array of unique paintings in the end. Which is a lot to say when you’re all painting the same thing. Elise walked around to make sure everyone was confident in their work, and made some little suggestions here or there if you were struggling. The bar staff at the bar made sure you were fully liberated (It makes painting much easier).

For those around the Detroit area, we found our discounts on Living Social, but I think they’re on Groupon too. It was really easy to register, and you get to take home something you’re really proud of. My only tip, is if you’re going with a group, sign up early. The fun paintings sold out fast, and you don’t want to get stuck with one you wouldn’t be happy to hang in your home.

So we’re signing up again, because: FUN (in case you haven’t been paying attention).

Keep Painting,

Raise your hand if that whole “journey to adulthood and participating in grownup activities” goes down the toilet when you’re in the presence of your favorite childhood toy…

Right? High five your neighbor.

Barbies Dolls, Action Figures, The Pet Shoppe (does anyone remember this gem?!), Lincoln Logs, Video Games, The Sims (guilty)…. or how about the old classic standby…

LEGOs.

Photo Jul 24, 11 21 26 AM

It seems as kids I couldn’t get enough of the tiny magic blocks that stacked and unstacked allowing me to create my favorite dream homes. I remember using Legos to build houses for my Barbies (clearly scale was of no concern to my younger self) and I would turn those tiny pieces of plastic into what was most assuredly the coolest furniture ever made with Legos.

When things got old I would take them all apart and move on to my next world class creation, and this process would continue over and over. Somewhere along the line though, the older I would get, the easier it was for me to get tired of the same old blocks and move on to another toy temporarily.

So, what if there was a way to freshen up your lego experience? You still get to build fun creations, but after you were done, you turned them back in and was sent a new one.

Enter PLEY.

2014-07-24_1038

First off— let me tell you how freaking excited Ryan (the Nerd)  was when I told him about Pley. Ry is a world class Lego fanatic. Seriously, he’s got a Lego Store VIP card. So when I told him there was a monthly rental service that you could sign up for and receive Lego sets, build them and then send them back for more, the next words out of his mouth were “sign me up”.

2014-07-24_1039

Of course being the VIP Lego builder that he was, he had some legit questions. Like:

“Can I build the Deathstar?” Yes dear, you can. Just add it to your Pleylist.

“What happens if I lose a piece, do I get charged a buttload of money?” Nope. You can lose up to 15 pieces per set and it’s ok. Accidents happen.

“What if I build the Deathstar and I want to keep it?” You can! Just tell Pley that you’ve fallen in love with their set and they’ll let you buy it from them at a discounted rate.

“Is it only one set per month?” Nope. You can build and return as many sets as you want in a month.

“Wait, isn’t that kinda gross? Sharing legos with people?” It totally would be, however, each Pley set comes in a handy mesh bag, and that *WHOLE BAG* gets tossed around in a sanitizer machine, fully dried and repackaged before moving onto the next builder.

He was hooked. So we signed up, received our first set and got to building. READ: Ryan hogged the entire set and built it while I pouted and took pictures. We’re officially on month 2 of our subscription right now and every time that Pley set shows up in the mail I get a happy little text from His Nerdiness. He even promised to let me add a few architecture sets to the list that I could build myself.

Who said romance was dead?

Anyways, I was telling my buddy about Pley just the other day, because clearly grown adults talk about legos, and mentioned that he should sign up. Pley has three monthly plans that you can choose from, $15/month for small sets, $25/ month for medium sets, and $39/month for those big guys… like the Deathstar. And just because they’re good people, the crew over at Pley even give you a free trial set to start out with.

Like any good blogger though, Pley and I are teaming up to give three of you FREE Fancy Prizes.

Don’t Ever Grow Up,

Signature-01

Baking homemade cinnamon rolls from scratch- me.  Tearing apart my bathroom and ripping out walls- me.  Building custom wood projects and puppy proofing the back deck- me.

Designing a vanity base on my style (the tom-boy with dirt under her nails)- now that’s a challenge.

One Kings Lane recently threw me a curveball and asked ME (they know who I am?) to design MY dream vanity based on one of their fantastic mirrors.

So…….   naturally I agreed.  I never back down from a challenge.

Wanting to knock this out of the park, I took some cues from mi casa and got to work. If you’ve been following for a while (high five to you!) you may remember a certain mirror project of my own. When I was flipping through the mirror options I spotted the wooden beauty below, which they accurately name the “Line Mirror”, that closely resembled my very own DIY mirror.

It was love.

That blue swatch over on the right…? Thats a pretty accurate sample of the ACTUAL color of my bedroom. So, I figured if I’m making this for me, I better design it where it’s actually going to go, right?

My bedroom right now it the dark navy & teal color, with loud pops of color. I have a HUUUUGE Red-Orange Ikea mirror that I absolutely LOVE.  So when I saw the Coastal Retreat Desk in orange I knew it was a perfect fit. Then came the accessories.

Reflect your style_OL-01I’m NOT a fan of crap all over my surfaces (you’d never know it though). I knew I wanted to go light with the accessories, maybe a vase of flowers here, a tray with all my miracle mixes there… You know, clean and simple. I love the white Earthenware Planter for some bright fresh flowers (peonies seem to really be the buzz right now), and when it comes to the “tray”, well… I didn’t pick a tray at all. Would you after seeing the Metal Lazy Susan? I’m pretty sure my exact words were “I’m totally buying one of these. Wait, It’d be great for art supplies too, so maybe two”. You can quote me on that. Go ahead. This sweet carousel will be perfect for holding my “can’t live without” items like my Style Prep & Face Lotion from Aveda (have you smelled their products? TO DIE FOR.) and my absolute favorite perfume from Fresh.

For some, beauty routines are quick, easy, five minutes “let me just fluff my hair, and put on some mascara”, but for the rest of us… we’re going to need to take a seat for the whole procedure. I didn’t want something that protruded into my room (It’s Marley’s playing area, duh.) So finding something that would pack away easily under the desk was a must. But so was comfort! The Farha stool accomplished both of these goals, with the added benefit of disappearing into the walls and light colored carpet when stored.

All this though, started from the mirror. I fell in love with a mirror (not a lamp, sorry san diego). A mirror with raw untreated wood, and a wavy line edge. What an accurate name indeed.

Phone Dump | 1

May 16, 2014

It’s been a while since I’ve had a good phone dump. And M’s been particularly adorable lately so for your enjoyment today here are *mostly* all M pictures.

photo 2_1photo 2_2
The second picture is M and Diesel, who is basically her best dog friend. These two could run and play for hours and then spend the rest of the night snuggled up.

photo 1photo 1_2
Lily smiles are probably one of the best things on earth. This is after a few cidermill donuts, and it’s almost like she was saying “cheeeeese”.

photo 1_1photo 3_1
M goes to work with me every day, and I’ve brought in a chair for her that she basically snoozes in all day. It give her the perfect height to stare out the window, and it’s the perfect size for a little stretched out nap. I recently built a gate for my deck (DIY to follow) M’s loving her new outdoor deck freedom.

photo 1_3photo 5
After a particularly playful day at the park M called for a afternoon snoozefest.

photo 3photo 4
Another project underway, coming to the blog soon! Nerd and Diesel cuddle session.

photo 2photo 3_3
Lily is such a graceful sleeper. Honestly, I wish I looked that graceful while sleeping.

photo 5_1photo 3_2
Nerd and I hit up our first Eastern Market trip of the summer last weekend. We made sure to grab some delicious authentic perogies as a snack. That tongue. Kills me every time I look at this picture.

photo 4_2photo 2_3
M’s *NOT* a graceful sleeper. At all. But she is REALLY GOOD at looking out windows.

photo 5_2
Probably my favorite M picture to date. Love this little munchkin.

Well yesterday may have been The Nerd’s day… but TODAY…. ohhh boy. TODAY is JUSTYNN’S DAY. CINCO DE MAYO!

And for everything that knows me… even the slightest bit, know that I’m a tequila drinker. (I’ve heard that I “got it from my Mama”)

Put the Star Wars away today babe, we’re having a FIESTA! And with any good Fiesta, you’re going to need some supplies and inspiration.

And Tequila. Lots of Tequila.

So, I’m going to confess something. There may have been a bit of more silence around these here parts recently due to… well…. someone.

And that someone might possibly be a boy. Who might possibly be stealing a large portion of my time… recently. I’m not going to complain. And hopefully you wont either. See he actually really likes my weirdness. And he likes my craftiness. And even send me project ideas and inspiration.

Bonus points.

Plus M is basically in love with him and I think it goes both ways….

photo (3)

Why am I bringing this up now? Well he’s a big nerd. To the core. In fact… lets just call him “The Nerd” from this point forward. Nerd is a big Star Wars fan, and today… you *MAY* (punny) have noticed is May the 4th.

See, I know what this day is… I’ve known it for years from past friends. But I pretended that I didn’t in front of Nerd so he wouldn’t have any clue that I had actually planned a surprise for him. I made him this:

photo-2

Kinda silly huh? But hopefully delicious.

So Nerd, just for you I searched the web for some Star Wars inspiration for myself.

Life Update

April 24, 2014

Wahoo!! I’m feeling like I’m finally over the death plague that’s been keeping me down lately. Hacking up a lung and everything. But it’s gone, I’m muuuuuuuch better and back with some good things!

It’s been restaurant week lately in these parts, Detroit and in Ferndale so I’ve been hitting up those places to review the food a bit. Those reviews coming soon! I’ve also pretty much have had plans after work every day in April. Which lead to less blogging and a whole lot of this:

photo 4

Those dots are some plan other than work. Yeah. I love my friends and family, but I’m pretty sure I’m taking May off to do some quality time. I advent even finished removing the wallpaper in my bathroom yet! Horrible DIY Blogger. Also towards the end of march my dryer moved past the pearly gates and I had to find a replacement, stat. Luckily I was able to, but the installation process was incredibly difficult seeing as the home builder decided to put the units in a closet.

photo 3

What else…. what else… Oh, I have a few Marley updates for you. Those will come in the next two weeks. Some new recipes… Super Yummy. Um a few small tutorials, a larger project that’s being finished up. A product review, and some site updating to do. All coming in the next few weeks. Sorry to have a non- bloggy blog post today, but wanted you guys to know I was still here, just things in the works and I’ll be back to more blogging shortly!

Leaving you with my go-to quote right now:

Signature-01

So back in January…ish? I talked about my resolutions and goals. One of those was to get fit again. Where have I gone with that? Well, I was exercising a few days a week. And then I was playing co-ed soccer for a few games. AND THEN I SPRAINED MY ANKLE. And I’ve barely done anything since then, because it still hurts like a mother-f’er. So, now that it’s starting to heal up, I plan on getting back into a routine more. I was doing bikram yoga for a while. Guys that shit is no-joke. Super sweaty afterwards. I’ve been taking Marley out more to play, trying to go on more walks when the weather cooperates and trying to find simple workouts that I can do when I get home quickly before the rest of my life takes over. Stumbled upon this greatness today and have immediately fell in love with the humor, design and ideas: Capture Absolute GENIUS coming from Neila Rey who has a whole series of your favorite characters, books, movies and tv shows for you to workout as. Definitely go check her out here. I also love her 30 Day Challenge and plan to start TODAY. Once it’s through you can do it again and LEVEL UP to make it a bit harder.

Beach/ bikini body get ready… I’m coming for you.

PS: LOCAL PEEPS: DON’T FORGET TO ENTER TO WIN SOME FREE PIZZA (Nothing like pizza when you’re trying to get into shape right?)

Signature-01

Great ready for another fun new series on CLA! This series is all about things happening around Detroit & the surrounding areas. Conveniently it’s going to be called “Around Town“. I’ve vow’d to myself to be more of a tourist of my hometown this summer and I’m hoping to bring all of you the down-low of what’s fun/ new and worth seeing in the area!

Starting off this new series is a fun trip towards the north-east side to Royal Oak. Myself and a fun group of bloggers hit up Blaze Pizza (Opened October 2013) to give it a try.

header_logo

Blaze pizza is the brain-child of Executive Chef Bradford (Brad) Kent, a man that grew up with a passion for food. Kent started cooking at the wee age of seven and quickly learned that food was more than just ingredients thrown together. We were told that his natural talent quickly evolved from dorm room creations at the University of Southern California to his first small plate catering company. Kent later went on to study at the culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, and then studies at Cal State Long Beach earning a food science degree. So basically this guy knows his shit stuff.

Blaze-Pizza-Executive-Chef-Honored-by-Zagat

Darla, the Marketing Director for Blaze in Royal Oak told us that the company is super proud of their penchant for not only healthy, quality, fresh ingredients but also for their dough. We were told that their dough ferments for over 24 hours before being put to use. Then it’s rolled out, topped and thrown in the oven for 180 seconds (yep, 180 seconds… crazy fast!) before being pulled out, sliced and delivered to you.

The pizza dough here is a thin crust, making it quick to cook. Kent’s whole idea behind blaze was not only giving his customers a quality delicious, CUSTOM pizza, but giving them a pizza that they could order and eat on their lunch hour. Speaking of custom pizzas, one of the biggest winning points about blaze for myself was the ability to customize your pizza in smorgasbord of different ways all for $6.95 a pie. Yep, that’s right. There are no additional fees for 20+ ingredients. It’s unlimited ingredients, your way, all for $6.95.

But enough about the pitch stuff. Lets talk about my experience.

Being the over anal person that I have then tendency to be, I showed up WAY early to the event and was the first person to arrive. This worked for me because it gave me the chance to really check out the place and chat with Darla before anyone else showed up!

One of the biggest things for me with restaurants is BRANDING. And I’m pleased to say Blaze totally passed my branding test. From the exterior to the bathrooms the restaurant kept to a modern industrial theme with high integration of typography. Below are samples of the to-go pizza boxes & menu.

Branding-01

The interior of the restaurant was definitely industrial & modern with the wood and metal mix of the tables, chairs & benches. The lighting was fun industrial lights in mural colors on the outside and fun pops of red on the inside. Right now Michigan has two locations in Royal Oak and Novi (with one coming soon to Kalamazoo), and this location had a private room up front for events. The wall of windows even open up for the classic RO restaurant feel during the warmer days.

Branding2-01

Once we arrived we strapped on wristband (showing we were part of a special party) and hopped into line. Blaze has some signature pizzas on it’s menu with fun names such as the Meat Eater, Art Lover, Link In and Green Stripe. All looked very appetizing but I felt like being my own chef and decided to Build My Own.

Blaze Pizza Menu-01

The best way I could describe the building process is to say it’s very Chipotle-like. You start at one end with a staff member and choose your dough. Blaze has gluten-free dough available and they are quick to find out if your choice of the dough is for allergy reasons or a preference. Which is great, because those with allergies know that even the slightest mistake could ruin your perfectly good afternoon. Once you pick your dough and give your name you’re passed down to the next staff member to choose your sauce and cheese. (Another item to point out is that it’s great that once person doesn’t do all the pizzas, thus keeping any allergens separate for those allergic.)

Buildcookslice-01

Just like with the sauce and cheese after choosing your options you’re passed onto the meat station and then onto the veggie station. I should also mention that at each station the staff member made sure to call you by your name. Which at first was weird, but is definitely a nice touch after the first time.

Blaze also has a nice selection of salads near the checkout and I grabbed a small caesar to taste test. Once you get to check out they ring you up and offer you a smores cookie for dessert. GET ONE. And have them warm it for you by the oven (Note: maybe get the cookie after you eat and have it warmed, because it tends to cool down while you’re eating.)

You wait all of maybe 3-5 minutes for your pizza to cook. Those ovens are gunning anywhere from 400-600 degrees on any given day, talk about HOT!

They call out your name when it’s pulled from the oven. And your handed your very own pizza. Pretty much maybe 10 minutes after you get in line. SUPER FAST.

I was so hungry at this point I almost forgot to take pictures. But don’t worry! I caught myself after I saw others making sure to get their shot!

my build my own-01

Delicious looking isn’t it? Well It tasted even better than it looked. I’m pretty much a huge fan of thin crust pizza, but this was definitely by far some of the better thin crust I’ve had in a long time. The outside crust was crunchy enough that it held up the weight of the ingredients, but not overly crunchy that you broke a tooth just trying to get a bite. The dough was sweet, and flavorful and divine!

Before I knew it more than half my pizza was gone! I swear someone was stealing my slices. I definitely couldn’t have eaten all that myself, right? I tried the salad and was please that it tasted fresh and the caesar was one of the dressings I liked. But the star of the show was definitely the pizza and the crust.

Suddenly I found myself with only two slices left and I made myself put down the rest so I’d have something for lunch later this week. Plus I still had my cookie to try.

Smore Cookie-01

I thought the cookie was pretty good, but I wish I had eaten it earlier, because it and cooled down by this point and was a bit harder to bite into.

One of the bloggers attending had gluten allergies and made a custom gluten free pizza. Once we had all started eating the staff brought out more of their signature pizza pies for us to try. They also made sure to bring out a gluten-free version to compare. I was so impressed that the gluten-free version was so similar to the regular that I found it hard to distinguish the two. Can you?

Veggie Pizza-01

Because of her allergy this blogger couldn’t eat the smokes cookie that contained graham cracker. She mentioned (along with others) that Blaze should server dessert pizzas as well and the staff graciously offered to make her a dessert pizza. In fact they made dessert pizzas for everyone. This is an item totally not on their menu, but they were so eager to please and make sure that we were satisfied that they went above and beyond. Behold, the very first Smores Dessert Pizza from Blaze Pizza in Royal Oak.

Smores pizza-01

I basically wanted my own. But, I shared. #stupidmorals. I doubt they’d make these for just anyone, but maybe if they get enough feedback they’ll add it to the menu??

Overall we had a really great time. A HUGE shoutout to Chef Kent, Darla, Jeff & Tim for making us feel oh so welcome and for the wonderful meal. I will most definitely be back for more.

And here’s the kicker… Not only will *I* be back for more… but a few of you will be headed to Blaze pizza for a free Pizza Pie of your own! Courtesy of Blaze Royal Oak, 3 winners are going to win a pair (that’s two ;)) of free pizza coupons to Blaze Pizza Royal Oak! Struggle Bus

March 17, 2014

Well well well, Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

I’m riding the struggle bus hard today after a weekend of celebrating marriage, by possibly drinking an entire fifth of tequila (the jury’s still out on that one).

But I wanted to stop in and wish you all a Happy St. Pats and leave you with this:

and possibly this:

I should probably never drink tequila again… but who am I kidding? I have another wedding next weekend….

OK, maybe not really four score. Google just told me that means “eighty years”. I’m not that old, yet.

I mean, it feels straight up 80 years ago.

When I bought my condo/ townhouse a little over 4 years ago, the space that sold me on it was the master bedroom/ suite.

The master was HUGE and had so many windows that it was just amazingly filled with light.

I have since learned that several large windows mean you never sleep in past 10 and it means you wallet is a lot lighter. Not only for blinds/ window treatments, but also for heating and cooling reasons.

But back to my story… The SUITE sold me. So while the master was yes- quite lovely. I feel in love with the bathroom as well.

Let me clarify.

I fell in love with the size of the bathroom, the size of the shower, and the amount of storage in there.

I did not love the bathroom wallpaper.

Yes, wallpaper. Continue Reading…

Love Bird Series-01

ANNNNNNNND She’s Back… after a slightly scary OS update that left me unable to use some of my fabulous programs & some internet issues leaving me unable to upload images, we’re back with the last couple type! If you missed any of last week’s posts, we’re talking fun unique wedding gift ideas for that wedding you’re headed to next month. Before you can find yourself a hot groomsman or bridesmaid you need to get some shopping done for the mr & mrs to be.

Last we left off with the ever adventurous Outdoorsy Couple. The type we all kinda wish we were… but would probably prefer sitting our ass on the beach vs. swimming in the water… Today we’re going to talk about the CLASSIC LOVE couple.

If this all confuses you, you probably missed my mind bowing conclusion that we all fit into 4 categories…

These categories are:

The Classic Love/ Romance Couple — This is the down to earth maybe modest couple who are conservative and completely in love with each other. They look forward to spending their life together, popping out some rugrats and look forward to the house with blue shutters and a white picket fence. Possibly a dog or two. I would call them traditional in all sense of the word and their wedding would be an even to match.

The Artsy Hipster Couple — This couple is all about trying the new cool restaurant in town before it’s even popular, they love art shows, live music and Etsy. This couple fill their home with eclectic homemade touches and plan their vacations around the next music festival. Their wedding will most likely have some DIY touches and a live band.

The Party Never Stops Couple — This couple put more thought into their reception than the actual vows, because they want their guests to have an amazing time. This couple is the pair that always throw events at their house and have all the ingredients/ tools to whip up a killer cocktail or jello shots in their cupboard RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT. They’ve got 20 extra ping pong balls for beer pong and a few extra air mattress for those who go a little too hard. They live to entertain.

The Outdoorsy Couple — This couple spend the majority of their time outside vs. in. They are always traveling, hiking, camping and have one entire closet or section of their garage dedicated to their gear. This couple love campfires and are more often found in REI than Meijers. They know exactly what freeze dried food tastes the best, and can tell you what direction you’re facing in the woods by observing the moss.

Anyways, back to the classic love couple. Here are the picks that would fit this couple perfectly…

Classic Love-01

Throw // Keurig // 3-D Art
Cutting Board // Let It Go // Jewelry Dish
Bicycle For Two Print // Plush Monogrammed Robes

I’m loving the let it go sign… that might be a fun DIY for next week!

Love Bird Series-01

Whelp, yesterday’s post didn’t happen. What DID happen was my ass totally getting annihilated by my very first bikram yoga class. You know … the one in 100 billion degree room, that last for over an hour and 45 minutes. That one.

Yeah, after that class, my ability to do anything but shower, take Marley to drop a poop and crawl into bed went to zilch.

So, that means TODAY we are going to talk about…. THE OUTDOORSY COUPLE. (how’d you know?)

Monday, I blew everyone’s mind by breaking down all couples into four categories. They probably spend across two or all of them, but for the most part they generally sit in one.

The Outdoorsy Couple — This couple spend the majority of their time outside vs. in. They know exactly what freeze dried food tastes the best, and can tell you what direction you’re facing in the woods by observing the moss.

Today we’re headed outside with the couple that spends more time planning their summer camping and figuring out how they can fit hiking, kayaking and work into one single day then they do sleeping.
